Madonna Coin Pendant

This coin is reflective of two of the three cultures influencing Hungary at the time it was struck. The front, showing the Madonna and Child, demonstrates the religious influence of the Holy Roman Empire of which it was a part for a very long period of time.

On the back is the crest of the great, conquering family, the Hapsburgs, who ruled a large segment of Europe for a number of centuries, Hungary included.

The one culture not a part of this coin is the Ottoman Empire. In 1526 AD, under Suleyman I, “The Magnificent”, the Ottoman Empire conquered and held a large part of the country. Unification was long in coming, only after many agonizing years of war. Yet, despite the pain, suffering, confusion and persecution the Hungarian people survived to reclaim their land and heritage.
